In 2007, the Quad Cities will host a series of activities examining some of the major coexistence issues that will define the 21 st century; poverty, ethnic conflicts, refugees, as well as local issues including immigration and coexisting with the Mississippi River. The nucleus of this endeavor is the traveling art exhibition, coming this fall.

"Theatrical Performance during the Holocaust"
These two talks will focus on artistic achievement by Jewish and
modern artists during the Nazi era. Free with paid admission or membership

Description of talks below:

Dr. Al Goldfarb will give a brief presentation on theatrical performance in
the ghettos and concentration camps during the Holocaust.

Dr. Al Goldfarb has been president of Western Illinois University since
2002. A professor of theatre, Goldfarb continues to teach theatre history
and has written numerous articles on the subject. He and Rebecca Rovit
co-edited Theatrical Performance during the Holocaust, which was a 1999
National Jewish Book Award Finalist.

"Defying the Nazis: Diversity in the Art of Exiled Visual Artists from
Germany"

Dr. Keith Holz will discuss how visual artists exiled from Germany responded
to the Nazi party's assumption of power after 1933, and to their intolerant
policies toward art and artists deemed "Jewish," "Bolshevik," "modernist,"
or "international."

Dr. Keith Holz teaches art history at Western Illinois University. His
current research interests include the Jewish collectors of modern art in
interwar Breslau, the artists Oskar Kokoschka and Paul Klee, and the role of
the visual arts in German governments' foreign policies, ca. 1918-1950.

Creating Coexistence
Creating Coexistence is currently on display in the Quad City Arts Center Gallery through September 28th. 

“Creating Coexistence” is an exhibition showcasing professional artists together with student artists living within a 250 mile radius of the Quad Cities on the theme of Coexistence. This regional exhibit stems from the International Public Design Competition & Outdoor traveling Worldwide Exhibition originally created by the Museum on the Seam, Jerusalem, Israel. Themes presented in the work address issues of people with differences being able to live side by side in peace as well as man coexisting with the environment.

This thoughtful exhibition features work of 29 regional artists along with their statements about coexistence. Images: the one saved as prayer chart is "Prayer Ladder " by Katie Kiley. The one saved as Indian is "Crossings" by Bruce Walters.
