André Aciman to Present Stone Lecture
Noted writer, André Aciman, visits the Quad Cities October 25 and 26. Dr. Aciman, professor of comparative literature at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, will present the Stone Lecture in Judaism and the Community Convocation, both at Augustana College.
Dr. Aciman's memoir Out of Egypt explores his childhood as part of a large well-to-do Jewish family living in Alexandria, Egypt. Dr. Aciman's stories about his parents' marriage, his grandmothers' love-hate relationship, family excursions to the movies and the beach, eccentric and loyal servants, and fitting in at school are told in evocative, loving detail. The memoir ends in 1965 when André is 14 as the family leaves Egypt under government order for the expulsion of Jews.
